Specialist Endocrinology Care
Dr Sophie Davies-van Es is a specialist endocrinologist providing comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and long-term management of endocrine and metabolic disorders in adults. Her practice is based at UCT Private Academic Hospital in Observatory, Cape Town, where she provides both outpatient consultations and inpatient endocrinology services.
Her clinical approach is grounded in evidence-based medicine, with a focus on accurate diagnosis, individualised treatment, and continuity of care.
Dr Davies-van Es is a Fellow of the College of Physicians of South Africa and holds specialist certification in Endocrinology and Metabolism. She completed her postgraduate specialist training through the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital, where she gained extensive experience across internal medicine and endocrinology.

Her clinical training included senior registrar and registrar roles at Groote Schuur Hospital, with responsibilities spanning inpatient and outpatient endocrinology care, multidisciplinary consultation, and specialist diabetes management.
Dr Davies-van Es has received several academic awards recognising achievement in internal medicine. These include:
- Asher Dubb Medal – Best Clinical Candidate, Fellowship of the College of Physicians Part II (CMSA)
- Huskisson Medal – Fellowship of the College of Physicians Part II (CMSA)
- Class Medal – Best Overall Performance in Internal Medicine (UCT)
- Will-Frid Exner Baumann Memorial Medal – Top student in Internal Medicine final year MBChB (UCT)
- Adcock Ingram Award – Best student in Clinical Medicine final year MBChB (UCT)
Dr Davies-van Es remains involved in academic medicine, including teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees. Her research includes work on diabetes and endocrine disorders, with a current focus on improving care for women with pre-existing diabetes during pregnancy.
Outside of clinical practice, Dr Davies-van Es values time with her family, reading and running and the balance that comes from life beyond medicine. She lives in Cape Town with her husband and their twin daughters, Isobel and Charlotte.
Clinical Services
The practice provides specialist assessment and management of a wide range of endocrine conditions, including:
Diabetes mellitus, including complex diabetes management and diabetes in pregnancy
Thyroid disorders, including hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and thyroid nodules
Pituitary disorders including pituitary hormone deficiencies and hormone producing pituitary tumours
Parathyroid disorders and calcium metabolism abnormalities
Adrenal disorders
Osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease
Endocrine causes of hypertension
Complex and less common endocrine conditions
Inpatient endocrinology consultations are also provided for patients admitted to UCT Private Academic Hospital
